Technology Feature of the Month:
Unified Messaging Made Easy

By: Milton Moore

It just got easier to get your voicemail in email. Microsoft’s newest version of Exchange supports native Unified Messaging. Unified Messaging is the ability to get your voice messages in your inbox. Another feature of Exchange 2007 is support for Speech Recognition. This allows you to navigate around in your voicemail box using spoken commands. Exchange server can also perform the Auto Attendant feature for dial-by-name and dial-by-extension options.

Unified messaging has been one of the main drivers of Unified Communications. Unified Communications (UC) is the capability of tying voice, video, presence and collaboration onto one common platform which is easy to use. The major benefits of UC are the cost savings and productivity gains. Unified Communications has become a very hot topic across organizations large and small.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager is one of the most popular IP phone systems available. Cisco UCM is very robust and has a lot of great features. One of the protocols that Cisco UCM supports is Session Initiation protocol (SIP). SIP is a standards based signaling protocol that many vendors support for interoperability between phones and other devices. Using SIP, it is possible to link Cisco’s Communications Manager directly to Exchange for voicemail.

If your phone system is more than 5 years old, consider Unified Communications. To discuss upgrading to Unified Communications, click here or call us today.
