Should your business
consider a cloud based
backup solution?
If you have not heard the buzz around cloud based services, one
might question if your head is in the clouds or perhaps under a rock.
In all seriousness, we want to cut through the buzz and provide some
information on one particularly beneficial cloud service - cloud
based backup.
Traditionally tape backup has been used by companies as a disaster
recovery method. While still relevant and commonly used today there
are benefits of cloud delivered solutions that are hard to ignore. There
is no longer a need to physically store tape, no need to remove tape to
a “secure” offsite location and most importantly, no need to administer
and manage the backup process.
Cloud based storage is agile and reduces capital expenditure, benefits
that are well received by organizations that need a backup solution that
is easily deployable and affordable. The elasticity and scalability of cloud
based backup appeals to organizations that need a solution that can adapt as they grow.
There are a variety of different cloud deployment models including: public cloud, community cloud,
hybrid cloud, combined cloud and private cloud. Companies that are not entirely comfortable with a
100% cloud based backup may consider a hybrid cloud storage solution. When evaluating different cloud
based backup solutions consider the following attributes: |
| • |
Security - seek an automated solution that encrypts your data |
| • |
Integrity - backup data should be proactively scanned for signs of corruption, monitored by trained and certified staff, and tested quarterly |
| • |
Operational Efficiency – automated, non-invasive and easy to use |
| • |
Compliance - archived data should remain encrypted, and yet easily queried and recoverable |
| • |
Bare-metal restore – the option to restore your data to virtual machines, dissimilar hardware or hardware at a different physical location |
Protecting one of your company’s most valuable assets, your data, should be on the top of your priority list. Cloud based backup is receiving a lot of well deserved and warranted attention and is worth
exploring. Working with an I.T. firm with a good reputation and longevity in the industry will guarantee
you will find a solution that meets your data backup and recovery needs.
