New PCs with Windows XP downgrade now a thing of the past
If you’re planning to buy new PCs, soon you will no longer be able to get them pre-loaded with Windows XP. HP, as well as other OEMs, are not permitted to ship any PCs pre-installed with the Windows XP Professional Downgrade version of the Operation System after October 22, 2010.
If you still need Windows XP, Microsoft will offer downgrade media kits, but all systems will come with Windows 7 as the standard OS. Per Microsoft, downgrade media kits will be available through July 31, 2011. To obtain a Windows XP downgrade media kit, you will need to work with the manufacturer of the model you purchased. For HP desktops and laptops, you can call 1-800-952-7689 within 30 days of purchase to request a media kit.

Cisco ASA Firewalls
by Caleb Oosterhouse, Sr. Network Engineer,
Corporate Technologies' Grand Rapids office
Question:
Why is it important to upgrade the IOS code on my firewall?
Answer: |
 |
Cisco has always been strong in the security field with the ASA series firewalls. However, as with any device, the software code must be updated as needed to keep up with changing technology and security vulnerabilities. Cisco has upgraded the Cisco ASA IOS code over the years from 6.3, 7.1, 7.4, 8.0, and now 8.3.
What is new with the latest code 8.3 and why should administrators upgrade their firewalls?
With this release many new features have been added such as NAT redesign with network objects, Real IP use in the access-lists, full IPv6 support, failover cluster license enhancements, threat defense optimization, and botnet traffic filter. With so many changes and enhancements a memory upgrade is required to run the new code. Cisco SmartNet customers are strongly advised to upgrade to this latest code to continue use of the full Cisco ASA feature set.
Please contact me regarding upgrading to ASA 8.3.
